How OBD Codes Work

OBD-II codes are diagnostic trouble codes stored by a vehicle when the control system detects a fault or an out-of-range reading.

A code tells you where to start diagnosing, but it does not always tell you which exact part must be replaced.

The best way to use an OBD code is to combine it with live data, freeze-frame information, symptoms and a visual inspection.
